Interlude 54

10-2-07

Picked up "Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer".  I wasn't a fan, what-so-ever, of the first one, but in the attempts to try and diversify my DVD library, I went ahead and picked it up.  I figure. . .why not.

I'm also looking forward to Transformers on October 16th.  This is one of the reasons why I have a movie room, for movies like these.  It wasn't the best film, but was fairly entertaining (when the camera sits still for longer then 3.5 seconds).  I'm hoping to pack the house that weekend for the first showing.  My kids however, need to age by about 5 to 7 years before they can see it, but I will definitely give them a glimpse of Optimus.  They might just have a heart attack.

Interlude 53

9-19-07

I can't stop!  I keep picking up DVD's like crazy over the past month.  And the titles keep rolling in!  Regardless, today I picked up "Commando Special Edition" including new scenes, interviews and as usual the upgraded sound and video.  Looking forward to watching this crazy action classic, one of Arnolds best, yet cheesiest, films he's ever done.  It's so bad, it's good.

I also picked up Die Hard and Men in Black II.  You'd think I should already have these titles, but I simply never got around to picking them up.  I thought it was about time to add them to the library.  Die Hard will  only be seen during Christmas (tis the season).  I have not even seen Men in Black II, so, it was a blind buy.  The MIB2 was also a superbit title, which cost me about 6 bucks brand new, so I took the plunge.

I feel a bit weird in adding all these new dvd's, while still sitting on the fence when it comes to HD and Blu-Ray.  At some point, the decision needs to be made (when there is a clearer winner, so far this war is a disaster) but I'm not sure if I want to buy ALL these films again.  My DVD collection has far outnumbered anything I ever had on VHS, upgrading at that time was worth it.  Right now. . . I don't know.  It is an expense and decision for another day.  Right now, I'm still trying to get risers done and re-design the stage for the HT room.  But for now, that's it.

Interlude 52

9-6-07

Picked up a few new movies all theStar Trek The Next Generation (Nemesis, Generations, Insurrection) films minus First Contact.  Had to special order that one, for some reason.  I'm hoping to go back later this month and pick up the original films with Kirk and Spock.  They are not the greatest films, but having grown up on them, they have left their mark.  I've always enjoyed the interaction of the characters above all else, beyond the special effects and storylines (in general).

For the kids I picked up "The Land Before Time"  Anniversary edition, which low and behold, and was a real stunner, the film is NOT in widescreen.  I had to do a double take, and couldn't believe it.  The anniversary is in full screen?  Damn.  The one time I don't check.

Also added a few new pictures of my new movie prop.  The King Leonidas Spartan Sword from the movie 300.  Just check it out.  Sweet.

Interlude 51

8-30-07

Purchased 4 new posters for the theater:  300, TMNT, Pirates of the Caribbean (Curse of the Black Pearl) and a cool generation 1 Transformers Poster.  All of these were picked up at www.allposters.com.  Sweet place to pick up just about anything.

This week I also picked up King Leonidas's sword from www.trueswords.com.  I picked up the "deluxe edition" and hopefully next week I will put in my order for his Spartan Shield.  I love having physical replicas of movie props in the room, it simply adds so much to the atmosphere.  If you have a moment, go check those sites out.

Interlude 50

The End for Summer

New shots in the theater gallery of a finished theater, minus the risers and stage, but that's a fall project (which I saved to kill time during the indoor months).  Many of the shots are hard to compensate for brightness, but you'll get the idea.  Still looking for a mannequin for my Stormtrooper outfit, and I will be adding a King Leonidas sword and shield from the movie 300, which was, frankly, a beautiful movie to watch.  I had waited to see it in my own theater, and man, was it worth it.

Check out the pics, then hopefully this fall, when the kids hit the books again, I will add in more architectural components to the room.  Including crown molding and some various other accents.

Ok, I'm out.

Interlude 49

7-8-07

Stage and Risers

First quick sketch of the stage I will have in probably later this summer, early fall.  At the moment, I'm working on the riser, which has become top priority at this time.  After some experimentation with that build, I think I'll be a little more prepared for the stage itself.

Interlude 48

6-24-07

Everything seems to be running great so far.  Still a funky sound issue, but I have yet to isolate it.  Besides that, we will be watching Children of Men and Harry and the Hendersons.  I'm looking forward to the latter, simply because I have not seen this movie in decades.

Other then that, I'm already planning a few more additions to the room, namely a new switch, rope lights and crown molding.   By next summer, the theater should look even better.

So, that's it for now.  Nothing else to report.

Interlude 47

Still no pictures.  lol.  I'm so lazy.  Anyways, popping in Norbit in the next few minutes, then Children of Men, followed by Rocky this weekend, sometime.  We also plan on hooking up the Wii and running a few 80's brawlers.  They are simple, mediocre games, but for whatever the reason.  They are just fun to play.

Besides that, nothing else going on.  The room seems to be getting better and better with each use.  Fridge is holding up, not leaking, keeping things incredibly cold (more so then our huge fridge in the kitchen).  However, the audio drop out problem is still a mystery.  No solutions just yet, but I think I did improve it a bit.  I need to put in a loud movie tonight and check it out.  Kids are out of school, so the room will get plenty of use this summer, looking forward to it.  But, that's it for now.  Pictures will just have to come whenever.  Maybe. . .just maybe, this weekend

Interlude 46

6-5-07

So far we have enjoyed several new movies in our home theater.  Needless to say there is less distraction, no cell phones going off and all the snacks I need or want in one place.  I'm still having trouble finding just the right candy holder, but the top of the fridge, so far, is handling the job adequately enough.

I am experiencing though, some unusual audio dropouts, and I'm still trying to diagnose the problem. That is about the only glitch, and it was most prominent on the dvd of "Casino Royale".  I'll have to do some research and see what's going on.

Nevertheless, its been great.  I will update sometime this month with new pictures and any new additions to the room.  Perhaps next summer we will add crown molding to the walls and around the posters.  that is the next big thing planned in there.

Interlude 45

6-2-07

Yes.  Yes at some point I will get pictures up.  Sorry, I've been incredibly lazy.  But I HAVE been watching movies, that is for sure.

Interlude 44

5-27-07

Just for the record, the gallery DOES NOT contain the final "look" of the room.  Close, but not the final result of blood, sweat, tears, electrocutions and the clubbing of innocent baby seals to get it done.  I want to try and find some way to piece together an entire image of the room, and make it look as close as possible to the colors.  I'm going to goof around tomorrow  with my digital camera and see if I can piece-meal an image.  we'll see.

Until then enjoy what is in the gallery.  I will update soon.

Interlude 43

5-25-07

It has begun!  What a weekend to finish.  I have a lot of movies lined up to view, including Pans Labyrinth, Night at the Museum, Children of Men, Norbit, Rocky Balboa and a ton of others, none of which I've seen, as I held out for our movie room to be completed.  This weekend is the following line up, then next weekend, we hit some more "grown up" movies.  Though I know many of these films fall in between "great" and "horrible", I will get to see it for myself, without interruptions, cell phones, talking, kids yacking and kicking my chair and stepping in soda.

I will have a few pics up, by the end of the weekend, of the finished room (ok, I lied, I still haven't gotten that stupid valence up, but it will be done some day).  Das it!  Thanks for stopping by, keeping up with the project, or for showing up due to a random search that landed you here.  Either way, thanks for visiting.  Though the room, in its pure essence, is never really done, what has been accomplished over the past 18 months has been a challenge, a pain in the rump and a few other choice words I can't type, but the end result has been great.

Now, its time to sit back and watch new and old movies, and see my kids reactions for the first time as they experience E.T., Star Wars, and many other films that are reminiscent of my childhood.

Interlude 42

5-23-07

No, not done yet, but so close I can taste it.  Today, we only managed to get the screen up.  Now, I like simplicity, so, the screen is quite literally hung by two picture hangers.  And das it.

It was, of course, a DIY screen, 1x3 lumber, with black-out cloth.  So, the screen really only weighed about 15lbs, if not less.  It will be masked by the red curtains and red valance.  There was a time I considered putting a black border, or trim/moulding, but I like the curtains best, and can frankly mask the screen quickly any direction.

The fridge is also up and running, and keeping things extremely cold, which is very nice and its quiet.  Added bonus.  A few more decorations and a valance, and I can officially say "yeah, I'm done".  Nevertheless, you can easily sit back and watch a movie, with no hindrances.  perhaps now, I'm afraid for it to end, its been a long love/hate relationship, so watching it end is kind of, well, disappointing.

No gallery update at this time, perhaps by the weekend, I will take a few more wide shots of the room so you can see a more completed theater.

Interlude 41

5-19-07

Oh man, so close to being finished.  Updated gallery with a few more pics.  ok, what's left?

1.  Decorations still linger, a few more posters and pictures to get up.

2.  Black curtain in the back, including a black curtain rod, still need to be hung.

3.  Red valence for the front of the room (that also needs to be hemmed).

4.  Oh, the screen, it still needs to go up, had a bit of a miscalculation and I have about 2 inches of screen hanging below the window sill.  perfect.

and after all that, I think its done.  and then I'm done.

I seem to be having though, a weird faint flicker on the screen, and I'm not sure what that's about.  Perhaps the romex is too close to the video cords, or something.  I need to investigate what this faint flutter is.  So, who knows what trouble that might cause, I'm hoping its minimal.

Interlude 40

5-17-07

Too much going on right now, but the projector is finally mounted.  Gallery is updated.  I will write a bit more later.  But after a year and a half, everything is finally up and out of the way!

Interlude 39

5-16-07

Well the install went by fairly well, with very few hiccups.  And after the intense drilling and complications that occurred in a few spots, I soon realized it was worth every penny.  I personally would have freaked out.

Nevertheless, at this time cords have been run, speakers are wired and placed, the new outlet is installed with a Panamax surge protector in place.  Component area has all the necessary cables, including a video cord, Cat5 cable (last minute addition) and a new DirectTV cable run (which was spliced into from across the room).  The only thing missing:  the projector.

Unfortunately, there was a mix up, and the projector mount did not have all the necessary parts to install.  It was disappointing, but at the very least they are coming tomorrow to finish the install and complete the project.  It is rather amusing, "Murphy's Law" is just written all over my life when it comes to these kinds of things, especially in the area of home improvement.   It appears it rubs off on those around me as well.

Well that's the update for now.  Another one will pop up tomorrow.  Hopefully, by the weekend, I can a majority of the room complete, cleaned and decorated.  There is still a few odds and ends that have to be wrapped up, but man, finally, its just getting done.

Interlude 38

5-15-07

8:00 a.m. it begins.  The final hurrah!  Gallery is updated with a few more shots of the theater, pre-install (projector/rear surrounds).  Should have a pretty good update again tomorrow night or by the weekend.  Check back soon!

Interlude 37

5-14-07

The Goal is in Sight

Ok, the final week.  This Wednesday the installers arrive to put up our projector, and finish all the in-wall wiring.  I will pretty much be cleaning up the room and disconnecting everything to clear the space for the installer this week.  I can't believe, that by the weekend, the room will be near completion, and frankly, could be about 95% done by this Friday (minus various decorations and such).

I still have NO clue what to watch for the first screening, but I have a running list.  I will update again soon, this Wednesday most likely, with new pics and the final look of the install, and by the weekend, should have the decorating done.  Hopefully.  Ok, that's it, time to order one more wire.  Check back soon. . .because this project is coming to a close!

Interlude 36

Fridge in Da House

I picked up a 3.1 cubic foot, Chefmate fridge today at Target.  We plan on putting this up in the HT room for quick access to drinks and any candy that might be chilled (I personally love cold peanut M&M's).  I was debating on whether or not to do this, but, its much easier to walk across the room, and grab a soda, then leave the room, go downstairs, and miss whatever it is we are doing, whether playing games or just watching movies.  To have the room more "self-contained" has been more desirable.  I just hope I don't blow a circuit.

We're testing the fridge downstairs to make sure it works.  So far so good.  Once the work is done in the HT room, we will be moving it up and filling it full of juice boxes/sodas and Capri Suns.  Should be fun.  Until I blow a circuit of course. . .

Interlude 35

Waiting. . .

As I've mentioned before, I am NO electrician, nor do I even have the slightest desire to even attempt large electrical work.  Replacing a light, sure ok, maybe an outlet, but installing one, running wires behind walls, and messing around with circuits is the last thing I will ever do.  However, that is all that remains.

So, not much to really update here, I'm still playing the waiting game.  The electrician is now scheduled for the 16th of May, and all the remaining final "electrical" touches will be complete.  Until then, I'm double checking speaker placement, nailing down the projector location, and ordering the mount soon.  My surge UPS outlet arrives next Monday (was supposed to be here tomorrow, but FedEx got hung up it appears) so I will have a chance to test that out before plugging everything in.

I am still hung up on whether or not to put a fridge in, and, finding enough room for some kind of small kitchen utility cart to put snacks and popcorn in.  Target has a great selection of stuff that I like, but none of it in black.  I may just have to pick up the cart, and spray paint it.  Unfortunately, a lot of other carts I have looked at are just ridiculously expensive, or lack some features that I would like.  Its amziing how much of a pain its been.  Finding cabling, and projector selection was easier.    Regardless this weekend I plan on making my final decision on what to do.  Then, I sit and wait. . .

Interlude 34

Near the Finish Line

Ordered a new power conditioner/UPS unit today, and should arrive sometime next week (quick picture updated in gallery).  We also heard back from the electrician, and they will be coming within the next week and a half to put the final touches on our HT room.  This will include projector mounting/ installing a new Panamax surge protected outlet/ running all new cables/wires / Installing in-wall speaker cable and mounting my new Bipol surround speakers / and of course putting in all the nice black speaker plates and wall finishes to my component area.

Sorry to say I couldn't do this "last" part on my own, but sorry, I just don't do electrical.  However, I will stick around to help and see how its done, to hopefully do it on my own the next time around.  I'm going to list some sites and equipment soon, so you know exactly what's in my theater.  It's all budget stuff, but performs wonderfully.  So, that's about it, we're nearing the final stretch.  This weekend I will nail down the final position of the rear speakers, do another measurement for the projector and testing a few more wires.  Then. . .it's movie time.

Interlude 33

Wireless

My wireless sensor bar arrived today thankfully!  Haven't tried it out just yet, but hope too soon.  With the Wii Component cables now in place, and a wireless sensor bar, I am almost able to unplug the Wii from downstairs and bring it up without a single cable. Well, except the DC cable, but even that I'm going to replace and buy a separate one for upstairs.

Not much else going on at the moment, I have a HDMI cable on the way to replace my DVI cable (with adaptors) to future proof my set up, for the time being.  I know, it all changes.  But at least I won't be running too many new cables six months after the install.  But, a few years from now is a different matter.  As always.

ok, I'm out! Getting closer and closer to the end!

Interlude 32

4-16-07

Electrical Quotes

Ok, well the electrician came today and gave us a pretty good quote on putting up our four surround speakers, running the wires, installing the plates, and a new outlet for the projector.  Also, putting up the new mount and running the video cables from the projector to a new location near our components.  All said and done (minus the purchase price of the actual mount) is around $350 bucks.  The last quote I received about a month ago, from a HT outlet was around 800 dollars.  And that was only the mounting the projector and running the cables, not including a new outlet or anything else.  HUGE difference.

Their earliest opening is two weeks from now, so, in essence the theater will not be done until May, which was my target date anyways, so all is looking good.  We'll see how this goes, I get the offical quote by the end of the week, and we will make up our minds then.  It's looking good and coming together nicely.  Not much longer, and the room will be fully functional.

Interlude 31

4-13-07

Testing. 1,2,3. . .

Ok, well, I called an electric company that does HT work, and have an appointment this Monday.  Why?  Well, sorry guys, I'm scared to death of putting the projector up.  I've got one shot, and I know ME.  I will screw it up big time.  So, at the very least, we are going to get a quote, and see how much it will cost to mount the projector, and run the cables.  Could I save money doing it myself. . . sure.  Can I also tear up my ceiling and ruin the only spot to put the projector?  Yeah.  That is totally me.

Anyways, that's Monday.  Today I hooked up a majority of the new cabling I received from Monoprice to give a test run (DVI-D cables, optical toslinks, and a new set of component). Wow.  Everything looked and worked great.  Especially the Wii.  480p does make a difference, not a huge difference, but it is very obvious when you switch over.  I love looking at HUGE channels on the big screen, that is a kick!

Oh, and by the way, Starfox 64 simply looks awesome, in 480P, huge and running through component, and it can make you motion sick if you sit too close.  Today's test went really well, so as far as things stand now, I don't have to send any cables back.  I have yet to test out the SVGA cable, perhaps later today, but it was nice to finally sit in that room, have components out of the way, and sit in new chairs and experience just a taste test of what the HT room will offer.  Even though I only had two speakers up and running, the room was booming.  I'm happy with how everything is turning out.  I can't wait to finish this up, pop in Zelda, and play a game all night.  well, not all night, I have kids.

That's it for now.

Interlude 30

4-12-07

Still can't pry myself away from Michaels.  They continue to have a huge frame sale, so I've unloaded a bit more dough then necessary, but I managed to frame yet another 27x40 frame with a less expensive option.  Couldn't pass it up.  I actually may go pick up another one tomorrow.  It's just too good.  I've had so many posters sitting in cardboard tubes for a decade or more, and finally have the space for them, so its just so hard to resist!

Besides that, I'm having a devil of a time trying to figure out my lighting options for the component and dvd shelving area.  I just can't find anything worth while.  I've settled for some puck lights at the moment but, I'm still on the lookout for something that will work well with what I've designed, and not stand out too much.

Finally, today I ordered a wireless Wii Sensor Bar from Nextronics.  It can be battery operated or plugged in, and has zero wires (well besides the plug).  This will easily allow me to keep the Wii near the projector, and at the component stand without having to mess with the thin, skinny wire (and short) that originally came in the box.  Sometime next week it should arrive.

Ok, I'm done for today.  This weekend I am going to "jerry-rig" my projector/components to test all the wires I purchased from Monoprice.  Hopefully they all work!

Ok, later!

Interlude 29

4-11-07

Chairs and Frames

Wow, just wow.  The chairs have been added to the gallery, and I couldn't be any more pleased.  If you are still building your theater, and haven't checked out "The Chair Outlet" (if they are in your area) you are missing something big.  We got a great deal, great service and of course, a really sweet product that will be entertaining us for years.  I don't want to sound like a commercial, but, we seriously had no problems to speak of and are very happy.  So, check out the gallery for the first few shots of new chairs, maybe a few more shots to come later.

Besides that, I purchased about 5 more frames today (including a huge 27x40) and my remaining cables should be in sometime within the hour.

Interlude 28

4-10-07

Commando Chairs

Everything must end at some point, and finally, I am getting closer and closer to the end of this project.  Albeit, though it feels great, I think I will miss all the craziness to some extent.

Anyways, its still just a ways off, but not too far.  Today, I just got the call that our HT chairs are coming in.  We should have them tomorrow!

Now, these are not Berklin, super high quality, cup holder with THX-built-in  type chairs, these are from Ashley Furniture.  They are 4 black, recliners called "Commandos" that will fit nicely in our theater, and considering their price tag, they were insanely cheaper then the more high end stuff.  However, Ashley Furniture is nothing to scoff at.  They were very comfortable, and I could easily lean back, kick my feet up, or recline all the way back and practically sleep in them.  Great stuff, and I will have pictures up tomorrow.

So, that's almost it.  My Wii component and subwoofer cables from BlueJeans arrived yesterday (with two more cables arriving tomorrow), so there isn't much else to do but buy a new mount and then, start popping holes in the ceilings.  YEAH!!!  Not.

Until then I've been purchasing great, yet cheap, frames from Michaels, huge sales going on, so I manged to snag about 10 new frames for everything in the movie room, well, so far that is.  Its been rather mind boggling to figure out where to frame and place everything.  I've been collecting stuff for a long time, and finding a place to put it is increasingly frustrating.  Anyways, enough chatting for now, lots to do, and its about to get crazy after tomorrow.

Interlude 27

4-7-07

CABLES and SPEAKERS

Fluance speakers arrived yesterday.  Some shots are updated in the gallery.  There is a bunch of good/negative reviews on this particular surround speaker, but so far, I have no complaints.  I still need to test them out a bit more (since my HT is not even set up) but they look and sound great thus far on my small setup in the living room.  I now have 4 surrounds to balance out the room and fill the remaining speaker placements on the back of my receiver.  Yeah!

Yesterday I also placed a new order for even more cables (seemingly to never end).  15ft of DVI-D cable, another optical cable, Subwoofer cable from BlueJeans cables and finally (drum roll) a nice premium grade component cable for the Wii.  All should be coming next week.

I think there are only just a few more things to order, and then, well crap, that's it.  Now it just comes down to all the nitty-gritty work.  You know, the stuff I've dreaded since starting.  Anyways, on we go!  Chairs should be arriving soon too.  hopefully!

ok, I'm out.

Interlude 26

4-5-07

Cables come today.  Managed to put up our component rack yesterday, thankfully, its holding well.  I hate trying to find studs when you have "firewalls".  Pain in the butt.  Regardless, I'm happy to report we found the right studs, and not water pipes, and the rack is holding strong, even with two heafty receivers and the rest of my components.  Right now, I'm still playing with placement, and the gallery has been updated with a few pics, but there is still more to do.

Yesterday was we hit 3 weeks on our chair order, hopefully only one more week to go before they arrive.  Got to hustle! Ok, well, that's it for now, more to come soon.  Very soon.

I'm out!

Interlude 25

4-3-07

Ok, cables should be here Thursday, and my new speakers on Friday.  Now I just need about 300 feet of speaker cable and mount my darn projector.  Well, that and four new chairs which still have somewhere between 1 and 2 weeks before delivery.  oh well.

That's about it at the moment.  Monoprice, once again, seems to have great prices and cables, I would definitely check them out, I saved TONS of money through them.  Check them out.  Ok, gotta run.

Interlude 24

4-1-07

Today I ordered some of my first few bulk cables from Monoprice.  A nice, premium Toslink cable for my optical ports, 25ft of SVGA cable for my computer monitor, and another 25ft of S-Video cable, simply because, if I'm going to wire this projector up, its getting the full treatment.  I want to spend as less time in the attic, or simply stapling to the ceiling, as possible.

Perhaps, also, we will get our chairs this week, and by next Monday I should have my new surrounds.  There isn't much left to purchase when it gets down to it.  Speaker wire, subwoofer cables, DVI-D cable and a Wii wireless sensor bar, are almost it.  Oh, that and a very long video cable.  The room is coming together, and it feels great, by this summer, we should have a fully functional room up and running.  This fall should be a blast when all the summer movies hit DVD.

Well that's it for now!

Interlude 23

3-30-07

After much pondering, I dropped the order for the Wharfdale speakers, and decided to go with Fluance Bipolar surrounds.  I've seen enough reviews, and insight from actual owners to change my mind.  Granted, this isn't THX quality, but it fits within my budget.  They should arrive sometime next week, soon wiring will take place and things will get moving along.  I'm still having trouble deciding on where/how to mount my electronics.  Wall mount, or traditional AV stand, just don't know.

Interlude 22

3-27-07

The Rogue's Spandex

Wow!  Carpet is down!  The entire process only took about 2 and a half hours to finish, with one man.  Once again, we went through "Lowe's" to have our carpet installed, and it really was a great experience.  No problems, worries, or snags along the way, and the carpet looks great, and feels fantastic with that huge 8 lb pad.  The gallery has only about 8 shots of the entire process (didn't want to kill you with details), but we are very happy with the results.

I admit, I panicked for a second, fearing I had made a HUGE mistake, red is just hard to match, and can sometimes look good in small quantities, but then when a vast majority of it is laid out, whoa, 9 times out of ten, your just dead wrong.  However, we must have shampooed with a bottle of "Rabbit Feet" hair cleaner, because we were lucky it all looked great.

The pictures don't do it justice, and I guess never will.  The room is just too dark, for the projector, to really get any quality shots, but you can take a look.  Hopefully next week, the new chairs might be here, then the ball gets rolling.  I plan on painting our speaker cable tracks tomorrow, and continue touching up any problem areas.  By May, I believe (or earlier) this room should be completed.

Interlude 22

3-26-07

Ok, carpet will now be installed tomorrow, Tuesday the 27th.  Our installer had an eye injury, so he can't start until later.  I guess I should not have scissor kicked him.  Oh well.

Anyways, last night I finished, for the most part, the screen.  It is 52x92, which is around 106 or something, diagonal.  It is not a HUGE screen, but it occupies the space and gives us at least a large image to work with.  Perhaps this week we will go ahead and mount the screen so its up and out of the way.  The screen is just 1x3 lumber, with L-Brackets for support, and simple 20lb picture hangers on each end to keep it level and secure.  I also used Blackout cloth, stretched and stapled across the back of the brace.  This is probably the best screen I've put together, the fabric was very "tight" across the frame, so no wrinkles at all.  Looks great, for, you know. . DIY.

Still looking around for "accent" furniture and pieces for the room.  It's looking a little bland, and I want some extra stuff to spoof it up.  Also, I need a good clock in there, one that can be seen with the lights off and look like it "belongs".  So, still shopping and busting up stuff.  I will post pictures tomorrow with the new carpet.  Its the first big step for the room, well, besides the paint.

Interlude 21

3-23-07

First off, I saw TMNT today, and within minutes of sitting down, I once again realized that having your own HT is the most optimum and enjoyable place to watch movies.  Screaming babies, chatting kids (I'm talking normal, loud voices, not even attempting to whisper) children literally running around, it was like a play pen at McDonalds, not a movie theater.  Is there NO movie theater etiquette?  The past 5 times I've gone, over the course of a year, have been identical, if not worse.  UNBELIEVABLE.

Anyways.  Our red carpet is finally going to be installed this Monday (March 26th) about a week and a half early.  Wonderful in some respects, but it has definitely accelerated some plans that I had originally paced out a bit.  But so far, working with Lowes and their carpet installers has bee great, no problems at all, and everything has been smooth.  Hopefully the installation will go as planned as well.  I will include pictures as the install happens, I'm curious, and nervous, about what our floors look like underneath.  Hopefully. . .no bodies.

Interlude 20

3-19-07

Added one more picture to the gallery, just of the new speakers I picked up from Amazon.  So far, I'm still just waiting for carpet to arrive, and then schedule an install.  After that, our new black recliners can be delivered.  Things are hopping along, albeit slower then I'd like, but once again, huge pushes forward this year, or at least this month, to get stuff wrapped up in there.

This is, no matter how you look at it, an expensive hobby.  Even when trying to save on speakers, wires, plates, racks, it doesn't matter.  Its just as challenging and sometimes even more of a headache, then just blowing 60K on a massive theater.  I believe, its equally as difficult either way.

Interlude 19

3-16-07

Well, cancelled the order for the Yamahas.  Just simply couldn't afford it right now, technically I could, but didn't want to spend that much money (from the budget) on a single item.  There just comes a time when you realize. . . I just need to wait.  Perhaps a few years from now, I can do a serious upgrade on the front speakers.

Nevertheless, we have however, made a few big purchases for the HT room this past week.  We are having new Red carpet installed in the next three weeks from Lowes.  After shopping around the "box" stores, then checking out local carpet sellers. . . sorry, the box stores were just cheaper, by hundreds of dollars.  Also, thus far, I have been impressed with what Lowe's has offered both in price and their professionalism when it came time to select the carpet, write up the contract, and work with their independent installers.  So far, so good.  However, I will chime in once the install is complete.

We also, finally, found some great seating from "The Chair Outlet".  We ordered 4 black recliners, that will fit everyone nicely.  It's about time too, I have been flabbergasted by the outrageous prices of HT seating.  Simply ridiculous.  However, this furniture (an Ashley's furniture brand) came in around $285 a chair, free delivery, and all brand new, not from the show floor.  I think we got a great deal.  I am going to shut up now, but, alas, finally, some serious work is getting accomplished in the HT room, after two. . .long. . . years.

Interlude 18

3-11-07

Ok.  slowly moving along.  We have carpet guys coming soon, possibly this week, and I believe we have stumbled upon some fairly nice theater seating, that won't cost us an arm, leg and esophagus.  I also just placed an order for brand new speakers.  The models are a few years old, but the product is new.  Yamaha NS-777 3-way tower speakers, with a beautiful black piano finish.  Should look great up in the room.  I haven't replaced speakers in over 12 years (going on 13) so it was about time.  Tower speakers seemed to pack the punch I needed for the rooms space.

So, a lot has happened over the past month.  Soon we will have either red or black carpet (still deciding), new speakers in place and seating.  By spring, we should be up and running.  Hopefully.

Interlude 17

1-6-07

Ok, new year.  So what's happening in the movie room?  Well, this year, above anything else three things will happen.  One, the projector is going up, two custom screen frame will be done and three, new carpeting.  The difficulty begins to set in as I try to pick the color of the carpeting.  Red or black?

I could almost go either way, but my gut feeling is red.  It appears more "theater" like, then just solid black carpeting. . .though I like the idea of the entire room being dark, and heck its black carpeting, it just sounds cool.

Well expect more pictures this year, then last.  And hopefully this theater will be modestly done by summer time.

Interlude 16

11-28-06

What is going on you ask?  Well NOTHING!!  Everything is on hold until a crucial resource comes pouring in, you know, money.  But hey, we have big plans for the room regardless!  New carpet, new chairs, a mannequin (for my stormtrooper armor) and a nice glass display cabinet to fill the back of the room for my collectibles.  Of course, that is in the future, hopefully by the end of next year.  The carpet is the first issue to deal with.  We are trying to decide "black" or "red".  It is still a coin toss at this point, I could go either way.  I'm just anxious to get better seating in there, and my collectibles in a reasonable location instead of our bedroom at this point.

Anyhoot.  So, nothing new right now, but lots on the drawing board, literally.  I guess I need to rob a bank.

Interlude 15

6-12-06

Well, this week, we hung the first set of red velvet curtains, spray painted the curtain rods black, and will be putting up some kind of valance this week before some friends arrive from out of town.  I tried to take pictures, but it was just horrible.  Now that the room is so dark, even with a flash the camera just takes horrible pics.  Hopefully I can borrow a better digital camera and get some clear shots of the layout. (UPDATE: I went ahead and posted some pics)  Anyways, things are still moving along, its getting closer. . . and closer to being finished.  A temporary screen is up at the moment, and hopefully this week too, I will climb up into the attic and check for my wire "run".  Then a few more sketches of the screen, and hang the projector and we'll be near the finish line.  It's about time too. . . summer is the best time to have a movie room!  Ok, das it, I'm out. . . until the net interlude.

Interlude 14

5-25-06

Just added a few new sketches to the gallery.  Redoing, slightly, a few areas.  I am adamant that my equipment be wall mounted. . .why?.. kids.  Little hands and paws will be off of them for a long time, or at least until they grow about 4 feet.  But anyhoot, changes, changes, and wishing I could crap money, but that just hasn't happened.  I need more Raisin Bran or Total, not sure yet.  Ok, check back later!

Interlude 13

5-24-06

Ok, so, I finally made it up into the attic.  I am not Closter phobic, but after that trip, I almost became one.  Whoever built our house, put the entrance to our attic (which honestly has no storage capabilities what-so-ever, its just a place for insulation) in our master bedroom closet.  Which is close to the side of the house.  Which made it near impossible to get into the main section of the attic because of tight beams, and very little crawl space.  It took me about 5 tries, but I finally did it.  Nevertheless, it looks like running wire and cable wont' be TOO bad, challenging in a few areas, but not as difficult as I thought.  Though, I am not looking forward to punching holes in our walls for speaker plates, but, its got to be done.  Over the next few weeks, that's the next step.  The step I have dreaded. . . there is nothing more daunting then putting a knife against a freshly painted, perfectly shaped wall to simply pop a hole in it.

Check back soon!

Interlude 12

5-16-06

So shelves are up, and I found some nice book holders at Office Max that fit nicely with the DVD's.  I picked up 3 sets of black storage boxes at Lowes that fit nicely underneath the DVD shelf, where our Nintendo controllers will be stashed, along with anything else.  We also finished putting up the sound board on the walls and the posters.  It looks great.  Some of the posters are temporary place holders, but I had to see if everything was going to work out.  The math looks good on paper, but sometimes, you just gotta see it!  Next up. . .screen and electronics. . .the part I have dreaded.  If I do not electrocute myself over the next week or so, there should be another update.  Thanks for checking in!

Interlude 11

05-13-06

Moving along!  Today I have posted pics of our shelving units we wall mounted, so that section is done!  Later today we will hang the sound board frames I built this week, and see how they fit and look.  Hopefully my drawings have done it justice.  Anyways, that is it for the moment, things are moving finally, still a lot to do, but at least there is progress.  Thanks for checking in!

Interlude 10

05-10-06

Wow!  What a long time for an update!  Well, needless to say budget restraints, travel and family affairs have put the finishing of the HT room behind schedule.  But I've updated the photo gallery with some new pics, and more  to come later this week.  We have finished painting, so that is great.  I am now mapping out the walls for poster and sound board placement.  That has been a chore, but is almost wrapped up. I will also be installing our DVD rack this week as well, and begin to map out where the components will go.  A lot has changed in the design process, so a few new hiccups have shown up, but, we are getting back on schedule.  thanks for stopping by!

Interlude 9

02-15-06

Nothing still this week.  I'm just sitting around waiting for the projector mount to arrive.  Also I've just spent a lot of time shopping around for items, such as mannequins, glass shelving, and alternatives to DVD storage.  So, in essence I'm getting a lot done, just not "physically" on the room.  I added one more item to the pic gallery.  It's a novel of The Dark Crystal.  It is one of the most inspiring films I've ever seen, and left a mark on me when I was a kid.  Anyhoot, finally got the novel and am looking forward to reading it tonight!

Interlude 8

02-10-06

Ok, door and trim done, doorknob installed (whoopie!) and now the door looks just like the walls.  Only one more wall to paint, but have to wait for electrical to get done before we go any further.  Hopefully soon, living with all my components and speakers in the bedroom has not been fun.

Interlude 7

02-09-06

Painting the door this week, or at least today and tomorrow.  It actually took 3 coats of paint to get it finished (for the top half so far), so it was a little ridiculous.  Who knew there was an art to painting doors?

Anyways, that is wrapping up now.  Also, ordered my projector mount two days ago from www.perfectmounts.com.  Got a really good deal, and didn't spend anywhere near what I thought I might have to.  Now I just need to figure out how to put it up? :)

Interlude 6

02-06-06

Bought the last few frames I needed for my animation cells and remaining lithographs.  I found a great assortment of frames at "Michael's" and spent about $50 bucks for 2 black floating frames and two large frames that could hold 3 5x7's to accommodate the remaining animation cells I needed to hang.  Now all I have to do is finish off the large movie posters I have.  Which, will take another chunk out of the budget.  But, oh well, I signed onto this.  :)  That's it for now!

Interlude 5

02-05-06

Ok, added a few shots of our new floating frames I found at Linen's and Things.  They worked great, and look good.  I have several 35 mm film cells that needed special attention, and a clear/glass type frame, and these, though acrylic, looked perfect.  You can check out a few shots of them in the gallery.  Besides that, I will be purchasing the projector mount this week hopefully, once i work out all the ridiculous "throw-distance" ratios. Geeze, its' like doing Trig or something.

that's it for now!

Interlude 4

1-29-06

Ok, well we just got back from Seattle, and have not wasted any time getting back on schedule with the home theater room.  Today we painted a few more walls black, using an Olympic brand of paint called New Black.  According to Lowes, this paint is used in media rooms, and should work perfectly for what we are trying to achieve.  So, in the gallery I've posted about 4 new pics of the screen wall.  Of course, it looks, well, black so its not too exciting, but will look good once the screen is up.  We are also narrowing down the choice for the electrician.  We are going to go ahead and add an outlet for the projector, with surge protection, and a new switch and outlet for the rope lighting.  I would LOVE to add a new circuit, but not for 500 bucks.  That is a challenge that will not be overcome at this time.  It would eat over half our budget, so we'll have to work with what we've got.  Ok, that's it for now, more to come later this week.

Interlude 3

1-24-06

Another electrician coming in today to give a quote on some new outlets and dimmer switches placed in the ceiling (outlets, not the switch).  I'm surprised at how expensive adding new outlets here or there can be.  You'd think its just a standard thing, something that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, but, well, there you go . . .it does.  Most people can do this themselves, me, I don't mess with electricity, and never will.  Thus I pay the price, to some degree.  Anyways, that's all that is happening at the current time.  Will apply some more paint later today or tomorrow.  I added 3 new pics to the gallery.  Two older ones, and another drawing.  Nothing fancy.  Anyways, that's it for today, thanks for stopping by!

Interlude 2

1-23-06

Painting is going by smoothly, though rather slowly at times, but its getting done!  Track lights are installed, which was a major pain, and still didn't turn out exactly as I'd hoped.  One of the lights is a tad imbalanced due to my electrical box being a bit loose, and the additional adapter plate I had to attach to keep the mount lined up correctly.  It looks good but could have looked better. . . if I was a licensed electrician!

Anyway. . the Rogue marches on!

Interlude 1

1-20-06

"The Rogue"

My adventure in home theater building has begun.  The last album on this page is dedicated to the sweat, tears and electrocution I will endure, as I try to build my own cinema for the enjoyment of my family.  The digital camera I use doesn't take the greatest pictures, so, be wary, it makes the walls look like sand paper.

I only have 5 pics in the album now, the rest are on 35mm film, so I need to wait for their development.  Previous pictures have some "before" shots, and our initial tape down of the room.  It will probably be about 2 months of work or less. . .and then years of upgrading and adding to the room until it reaches its full potential.  The theater is temporarily called "The Rogue" due to my color choices, which can be found in the Batman Animated universe, as well as classic colors used by vigilantes for decades.  It was the hardest part of the whole design, trying to nail down the colors, and praying the paint (especially the color red) came out the way the paint chip displayed.  So far, its been perfect.

Alright, no more chat.  Enjoy what little remains in the album, later next week I should have some new pics up.  thanks for stopping by!
